Kirsty Ward‘s Spring/Summer 2012 collection sees the Oxford born womenswear designer continuing to explore her love of sheer fabrics, multi-layering and heavy embellishment. This season Kirsty draws inspiration from office wear fabrics, the neon and neoprene of work wear, men’s clothing and everyday stationery to create an arresting array of dazzling garments. I like Kirsty’s clothes which can change their appearance by detaching one part from the other; thus a long coat can become a short jacket, and trousers can be transformed to a t-shirt!! (or probably a jumpsuit for small ladies like me 🙂 ) Some of the collars from the SS12 collection are multi-layered.
Suspended layers of blue organza held together with delicate brass chains, cotton stripped shirts adorned with dozens of metal hooks and the combination of silks and neoprene combine to produce a collection which is both sporty and luxurious, experimental yet wearable. Kirsty’s signature aesthetic of blurring the lines betwwen clothing and jewellery is back in full force with oversized Swarovski necklaces and coloured chains draped over cotton dresses and sheer tops. At the Designer Exhibition during London Fashion Week, almost all of Kirsty’s garments were decorated with her recognisable jewellery.
Kirsy Ward launched her eponymous label in 2010, following the completion of an MA in Womeswear at Central Saint Martin’s, for which she gained a distinction, and a career defining spell designing for Alberta Ferretti in Italy. Short-listed in the Breakthrough Designer category at the WGSN Global Fashion Awards she has also been named by Vogue.co.uk as a “Designer to Watch in 2011” and featured in Elle magazine’s article on creative rising stars of the future.
